Tonight we traveled to Thailand and I can really get into this cuisine. This stuff was was so good!! Thai cuisine blends 4 tastes: sweet, spicy, sour and salty. Most dishes try to combine most, if not all, all of these tastes. I made Bob's Thai Beef Salad http://allrecipes.com/recipe/bobs-thai-beef-salad/detail.aspx and Peanut Butter Noodles http://allrecipes.com/recipe/peanut-butter-noodles/detail.aspx with sticky rice and sliced fresh mangos for dessert.
These are the Peanut Butter Noodles. I did not use udon noodles, I had rice noodles that needed to be used instead. That was the only thing I did different in the recipe and I will make this from now on and on a regular basis.
One of the most distinctive customs in Thailand is the wai. It is used to show greeting, farewell or acknowledgment, it generally involves a prayer-like gesture with the hands and a bow of the head. And did you know that it's considered rude to touch someone on the head? It's also considered rude to step on a coin because the king's head appears on coins. It is also customary to remove your shoes before entering someone's house and you should not step directly on the threshold.

This is a picture of Bob's Thai Beef Salad. I modified this recipe by adding tomatoes and chopped cilantro. I also sliced 2 serrano chiles instead of using Thai chiles. Thai chiles are very hot and I wanted my husband to be able to enjoy this as he isn't able to tolerate a lot of spicy heat at this point in time. I did not use the 1 cup of fish sauce after reading the reviews of this recipe, I used approximately 1/4 cup instead.
Thai New Year Songkran is observed from April 13-15 each year. The primary religion is Buddhism.

The capitol of Thailand is Bangkok. It has been said that there are more eating establishments per square mile in Bangkok than anywhere else on Earth.

And this was dinner tonight! YUMMY! I love the fresh taste of the vegetables combined with the warm beef and the salty fish sauce. I think next time I make Peanut Butter Noodles, I will try the udon noodles, as I can't remember ever having them before and I'm curious.

My grocery bill was $13.72, so that $6.28 to go into the Beach Bag Fund. The total after 10 weeks is $65.02. Not too bad, if I do say so myself. Yesterday, the Recipe Exchange voted and I thank each one of you that did. Bob picked Ireland, in honor of St. Patrick's Day, I, randomly, chose French Polynesia (Tahiti) and in a landslide win, we will be traveling to Ireland next week. Just to let you all know, we did get the results of Bob's biopsy today and he does have throat (vocal chord) cancer. They are going to do radiation treatments. I don't know what stage or anything yet. I'm still rather numb upon hearing the news, but I did say last week in the Egypt blog, that when I found I would let all of you know. So, now you all know. So, until we meet in Ireland next week...peace and good will to you all. Thank you for reading!
